14. The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS)
Recognized and supported by the American Dental Association, the ABOMS is the only organization that certifies surgeons in the specialty field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The mission of the ABOMS is to establish and enforce standards of care in this field through education, training, and experience. The Board is responsible for examining potential members, awarding certification for qualified surgeons, and assisting those surgeons in maintaining their certification.
The process for gaining certification is rather complicated. First a candidate must provide proof that he or she has completed training in an accredited residency program. Secondly, proof must be submitted that there has been some post training experience. Finally, the candidate must take and pass a written and oral examination that encompasses the entirety of the specialty. Once all of these steps have been successfully completed, the candidate becomes known as a Diplomate and is awarded a ten year certificate. Three years prior to the expiration of the certificate, the Diplomate can apply for recertification, which is another process that ensures the surgeon has stayed current on new technologies and procedures. Once the recertification process has been passed, a new certificate will be issued.
