Are You a candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is a process for removing fat deposits from locations in the body. The surgery is performed in three steps:
- The surgeon marks the spots for fat removal
- General or local anesthesia is administered
- Fat is removed using a vacuum-like tool called a cannula
Assessing Candidacy for Liposuction
Though liposuction is a relatively simple procedure there are risks, as with any surgical procedure. The general surgery risks are anesthesia complications and the risk of infection. Anesthesia risks result from allergic reactions. Reactions include swelling, hives, and difficulty breathing. As for infections, any opening in the skin increases the risk of bacteria entering through the skin opening and into the body.
Risks particular to the liposuction procedure include damage to tissue and organs underneath the fat being removed, friction burns from the cannula used to remove the fat tissue, lumpy appearance at site of fat removal, dents in the skin and sagging skin if elasticity is poor.
The above risks exist so in order to minimize them further and eliminate complications, a doctor will assess an individual’s eligibility for a specific liposuction procedure. Specifically, the doctor will assess an (1) individual’s health, an (2) individual’s weight and skin condition and an (3) individual’s expectations of what the outcomes will be.
(1) Health
Consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon begins with a thorough medical history check. The doctor inquires about any existing medical conditions including heart problems, lung problems, diabetes, circulatory problems or any other condition that may interfere with the successful completion of the surgery and recovery. Any medications taken must also be disclosed to the doctor since they can interfere with surgery and recovery.
(2) Body Weight and Skin Condition
Ideal candidates for liposuction are individuals not more than 20 pounds overweight and who have tried diet and exercise to reduce fat pockets. Also, ideal liposuction candidates have elastic skin that will shrink in the area of fat removal.
(3) Expectations
The doctor discusses the individual’s expectations of the procedure to assess whether or not the individual has realistic expectations. The doctor will inform the individual of the risks of surgery and the likely outcomes, as well as the recovery process. Unrealistic expectations may disqualify an individual for this surgical procedure.
Liposuction Outcome
Liposuction is not a replacement for a consistently healthy diet and regular exercise program. It is definitely not an option for achieving permanent weight loss. The results of liposuction are permanent as long as the individual maintains his or her weight. Redefining and sculpting an area of your body is the outcome of liposuction, but it will not offer a completely new shape. It will not increase the quality of your life, but it may contribute to increased body confidence.
