Body Areas

Most patients choose to undergo liposuction to remove fat cells from their abdomen, arms, breasts, hips, flanks, thighs or stomach.

Other common areas are the buttocks, chin, face and neck.

Find a short synopsis for each body part below, and click on the links within the blurbs for more in-depth information.

Abdominal Liposuction

The struggle to lose abdominal fat is a common one.

In fact, the stomach is one of the hardest areas to contour with just diet and exercise because the abdomen tends to be very resistant.

Liposuction can be an effective and long lasting procedure to help those who wish to improve their abdomen appearance by trimming excess fat from the stomach area.

In most cases, liposuction of the abdomen is a simple procedure because most of the fat is located right beneath the skin and can be easily sucked out.

Arm Liposuction

Liposuction of the arms is an option for individuals who wish to remove excess weight (or flab) from their arms.

This procedure is particularly effective for otherwise slim and healthy individuals. By removing the excess fat from the arms, the patient can finally have the proportioned physique they desire.

Patients who undergo liposuction of the arms usually notice satisfactory results after the procedure.

Breast Liposuction

The goal of breast liposuction is ostensibly the opposite of most plastic surgery on the breast area - to make the breasts smaller rather than larger.

In some case, the breasts can be reduced in total size by up to 50% with a great side benefit being a natural lift to the breasts with the reduced weight.

A breast lift on its own can also be performed - more on breast liposuction here.

Chin Liposuction

Even the skinniest of supermodels can struggle with a double chin as folds of excess skin under the chin can have a very fattening effect on a very slender figure.

The area under the chin is often the first area to gain weight and one of the last areas to lose it.

Exercise also does very little to slenderize the chin as well, making chin liposuction one of the only real alternatives..

In fact chin liposuction, or a neck lift, has become very popular because it is a relatively simple surgery with very little scarring that can dramatically affect the look of a face.

More on chin liposuction.

Face Liposuction

The face is another area of the body that tends to be resistant to diet and exercise, making liposuction an easy alternative.

Facial liposuction involves the area surrounding the chin, the jowls and the cheeks.

Because genetics, not overall body fat or weight, usually dictates the amount of fat located in a person’s cheeks, liposuction might be a person’s only option to target fat in this area.

For some patients, a face lift would be a better option than facial liposuction.

Face lifts are best for individuals with little fat but with large folds of excess skin. In most cases, however, facial liposuction is preferred because it causes less scarring.

Neck Liposuction

Some older individuals are interested in neck liposuction to give them a firmer and trimmer neck.

Usually, neck fat is resistant to diet and exercise, making liposuction an effective way to contour the neck and give the patient a more youthful appearance.

Neck liposuction is also a good option for individuals with excessively wrinkled skin.

Stomach (Tummy) Liposuction

Liposuction of the stomach area is the most popular fat-removal procedure for both men and women.

The ideal candidate for stomach liposuction should be less than 30% over their recommended weight and only have an issue with fat accumulation around the midsection

For a complete "tummy tuck" procedure, liposuction is performed first to remove the excess fat before some skin reconstruction is done around the abdominal area.

In some cases, the liposuction provides enough improvement that a full surgical tummy-tuck isn't needed. More on tummy tucks.

Thigh Liposuction

Liposuction of the thigh is a procedure that most doctors recommend be divided up into multiple hospital visits as it's unsafe to undergo complete thigh liposuction all at once.

Liposuction of an entire thigh increases the risk of swelling and lengthens the recovery time.

By breaking up liposuction of the thigh into several procedures, it allows the doctor to focus on targeted areas one at a time to quickly and evenly drain excess fluid.

Those who undergo multiple procedures are usually more satisfied with their results because their thighs tend to be more evenly shaped and desirable.

Buttocks Liposuction

Liposuction of the buttocks can be a tricky procedure.

The goal is not just to reduce the size of the buttocks, as this could yield a misshapen or lumpy shape.

The goal is to contour and shape the buttocks to create a more desirable appearance for the patient.

Doctors must operate in an artistic manner when they plan a patient's buttocks liposuction operation.

Flank Liposuction

While both male and female patients sometimes choose to get flank liposuction, the procedure is different depending upon the sex of the patient.

For men, the flank region is usually located above the belt line on their side and their backs. When men choose to undergo liposuction of their flanks, they usually wish to address excess fat that bulges over their pants.

For women, the flank region refers to the area beneath their breasts on their sides and their backs. In either case, liposuction of the flanks is a simple procedure with the patient under local anesthetic.

Hip Liposuction

Liposuction of the hips is most common in women, as they are more likely to have excess fat in this area.

When women choose to undergo hip liposuction, they usually are looking to not just remove excess fat but to help improve the shape of their hips to give them a more desirable figure and silhouette.

While hip liposuction usually delivers satisfactory results, patients may require additional liposuction procedures in the future to maintain the same figure.

In most circumstances, women undergoing liposuction of the hips are given local anesthesia.

Remember

Although liposuction removes excess fatty tissue from the body, the primary purpose of liposuction is not usually weight loss.

Instead, it is better to think of liposuction as a procedure to change the shape, contour, and definition of a patient’s body.

While patients usually do lose weight when they undergo liposuction, liposuction is most beneficial when it is utilized as a method to contour areas of the body that are difficult to manage.

Patients who undergo liposuction usually do so when diet and exercise fail to give them the body shape and tone they desire.

Liposuction patients are always advised they should focus first on the quality of the liposuction procedure rather than the costs. But, of course, costs matter;

Liposuction prices will vary depending on the area(s) of the body chosen and the amount of work needed. The total price is usually broken down into a few separate costs: Surgeon fees, Facility fees, Medications, Anesthesia, Surgical garments & Medical tests.

Surgeons fees vary based on the operation required and the national average cost in 2010 was $2,884. Anesthesia fees range from $500 to $1,000. Facility fees vary based on the number of areas worked on and usually range from $600 to $1,200.
