Find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon - Liposuction Specialist

Choosing the right liposuction specialist or plastic surgeon is a big decision, and it only makes sense to demand someone highly skilled, experienced and trustworthy to perform your procedure.

Almost all plastic surgeons can claim to be "board certified," but the most critical certification for liposuction comes from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).

To speak directly to one of our call center experts about this distinction and to book a free consultation with a board certified surgeon in your area, call 877-357-3706.

What Does "Board Certified" Mean?

When it comes to plastic surgery, board certification can be a bit confusing. Most plastic surgeons have several kinds of society memberships and board certifications depending on their specialties.

Not all are created equal however.

All certifying boards require different amounts of surgical training and experience. In other words, all "board-certified" physicians are not equally trained for all cosmetic surgery procedures.

To erase any doubt or confusion regarding proper certification, choosing an ASPS Member Surgeon ensures the surgeon:

  • Has at least 6 years of surgical training/experience and a minimum of 3 years specifically in plastic surgery.
  • Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures including breast, body, face and reconstruction.
  • Operates only in accredited medical facilities.
  • Adheres to a strict medical code of ethics.
  • Meets continuing medical education requirements, including standards and innovations in patient safety.
  • Is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or in Canada by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada

What Questions Should You Be Asking?

Before deciding on a plastic surgeon, these are the most important things to consider:

  • Is the surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery?
  • Is the surgeon a member of the ASPS?
  • Did he or she discuss your medical history thoroughly to determine if you are a good candidate?
  • How many procedures has he or she performed (especially the procedure you're about to undergo)?
  • Does the surgeon address all the risks of the procedure/cosmetic surgery?
  • Does the surgeon explain what process and techniques will be used?
  • Does the surgeon encourage realistic expectations?
  • Are you personally comfortable with the surgeon?
  • Can he or she provide real testimonials from satisfied customers?
  • Are you comfortable with the facility where the procedure will be performed?

During your initial consultation, make sure you're completely comfortable with the surgeon and that he or she addresses all of your concerns.

Your surgeon should be more than happy to answer any questions, provide before and after photos or testimonials, and inform you about all aspects of the procedure.

Simply put though, beyond the proper certification, testimonials and general information about the procedure, if you feel the doctor doesn't put your well-being and your likelihood for success first and foremost, find another doctor.

What Your Doctor Should Be Telling You

The Risks

Keep in mind plastic surgery is still surgery, and as with any medical procedure there are potential risks.

To reduce those risks, patients should be in generally good health. Any type of infection, diabetes, or heart or circulatory problems should eliminate you as a good candidate right away.

If you smoke, you'll definitely need to stop prior to the procedure and for a few weeks afterwards.

It's also important to disclose your entire medical history to your surgeon along with all the medications (prescription or otherwise) you take.

Minor complications from plastic surgery can include:

  • Disappointment with the results
  • Scarring
  • Bruising
  • Numbness
  • Nerve damage

More severe complications include:

  • Blood clots
  • Injury to organs
  • Seizures
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Excessive blood loss

Most minor complications are dealt with easily, but some can develop into larger problems. More severe reactions, including brain damage, can also result from problems with the anesthesia.

Excessive liposuction (the tendency of some surgeons to perform too much surgery in one day) will also greatly increase these risks.

Your surgeon should never combine multiple liposuction procedures or try to remove large amounts of fat in a single procedure.

Liposuction is most effective when focused on contouring specific areas of the body. If your Doctor tells you otherwise, again it's probably best to find another Doctor.

Recovery Time

Initial recovery time may only take a few weeks, but it may be several months before you see the full impact of the procedure.

After surgery, you'll need to wear compression garments for several days. The pain subsides after a few days, and usually you can resume work and other activities within two weeks.

Swelling doesn't fully subside until several months after the procedure and it may take some time for the skin to tighten up. Your surgeon may schedule multiple post-op visits to check on your recovery.

Depending on how extensive the liposuction was, your recovery time may be longer.

Remember

Liposuction isn't a "quick fix" for shedding a few pounds.

Deciding whether or not to have liposuction is a major decision and you need to have comprehensive and reliable information to make the right choices.

Picking the right doctor is equally important.

If the first doctor you consult isn't board certified and doesn't answer your questions adequately, he or she probably isn't the right doctor for you.

If you have any concerns or questions about the proper certification any liposuction doctor should have, call our help center at 877-357-3706 or submit your information below to get in direct contact with one of our liposuction experts.

Liposuction patients are always advised they should focus first on the quality of the liposuction procedure rather than the costs. But, of course, costs matter;

Liposuction prices will vary depending on the area(s) of the body chosen and the amount of work needed. The total price is usually broken down into a few separate costs: Surgeon fees, Facility fees, Medications, Anesthesia, Surgical garments & Medical tests.

Surgeons fees vary based on the operation required and the national average cost in 2011 was $2,859. Anesthesia fees range from $500 to $1,000. Facility fees vary based on the number of areas worked on and usually range from $600 to $1,200.
