5. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS)

Representing over 2,700 facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons, the AAFPRS is the world’s single largest specialty association. Founded in 1964, the AAFPRS has a very specific mission that includes using education to provide and promote the highest quality facial plastic surgery; to establish a concrete, definitive definition of facial plastic surgery as a specialty requiring extensive training; and to achieve the recognition among the medical community that facial plastic surgery is indeed a specialty.

With the growing number of surgeons choosing a specialty, such as facial and reconstructive surgery, the AAFPRS created the Education and Research Foundation in 1972. This foundation is responsible for addressing both the scientific and medical challenges that facial plastic surgeons are confronted with on a regular basis. Furthermore, the AAFPRS foundation provides courses, workshops, and training programs aimed at enhancing the knowledge of facial plastic surgeons.

Any surgeon who wants to become specialized or already is specialized in this field must be registered with this organization. It is an important membership to hold because all members must be focused on patient care and have comprehensive, extensive training in facial surgery. Currently all members of the AAFPRS are certified by one or more of the following organizations:

  • A specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties,
  • The American Board of Otalaryngology,
  • The American Board of Facial and Plastic Reconstructive Surgery,

And many are certified in plastic surgery, dermatology, and opthamology.
