8. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)

Aesthetic plastic surgery is another branch of cosmetic surgery in which otherwise normal body parts are surgical altered to make them more pleasing to the person. It is elective surgery to boost self esteem. The ASAPS was founded in 1967 and it going strong with over 2,400 members in the United States and Canada. Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the ASAPS is an educational organization that publishes the Aesthetic Surgery Journal--the most widely read journal among the plastic surgery community.

In addition to that impressive list of credentials, the ASAPS is a stout patient advocate. Firmly believing in the right of the public to be fully educated about the credentials of their surgeons, ASAPS proudly provides this information along with accurate, up to date research about all things relating to cosmetic plastic surgery. This is truly an elite organization that all surgeons should strive to gain membership into. However, it is much easier said than done.

In order for a surgeon to become a member, he or she must first be sent an invitation. Next an election process occurs and it is estimated that only one quarter of the surgeons who apply are actually accepted. Requirements for becoming a member include:
• Be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery
• Must be specialized in the area of plastic cosmetic surgery
• Must have at least three years of active practice after becoming certified by the ABPS
• Must be current and stay current with the CME or Continuing Medical Education
• Must be able to accurately document surgical experience by providing proof of a significant number of successful surgical procedures and
• Must be sponsored by two ASAPS members.
Plus, it is imperative that all members and applicants strictly adhere to the ASAPS code of ethics.
