6. The American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS)

Similar to a few of the other organizations that have been previously discussed, the ASDS is a specialty organization that is devoted to surgeons who are immersed in the field of dermatology and more specifically, skin cancer. The ASDS, which was founded in 1970, currently has approximately 4,700 members and is responsible for developing safe, in-office procedures for the detection and treatment of skin cancer.

Members of the ASDS must be board certified in dermatology and they must be willing to commit to the organization's strong desire to advocate for consumer safety. The ASDS works to educate the public about the practice of dermatological procedures by non-medical professionals, such as what occurs at spas and other health clubs.

This is one of the only specialty organizations that are devoted to dermatological plastic surgery so a surgeon practicing this type of medicine should undoubtedly be a member of this organization. And as a patient looking for a dermatologic surgeon, you should absolutely find a surgeon who is a registered member of the ASDS. However, the one disadvantage to this organization is that it appears to be overly concerned with education as opposed to patient care, which could be an issue for potential patients.
