2. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)

Founded in 1931, the ASPS is comprised of board certified plastic surgeons whose mission is to provide advanced quality plastic surgery to all patients.

The ASPS accomplishes this by encouraging and requiring members to meet high standards of training, ethics, and research.

Furthermore, this organization strongly advocates for patient safety by publishing informational brochures and maintaining a website in an attempt to educate potential patients about all things related to plastic surgery.

Working in conjunction with the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF), these two organizations support vigorous research into new procedures and even supports an international volunteer program.

Any surgeon can apply to become registered with the ASPS but surgeons who want to become registered with the ASPS must first meet the following requirements:

  • Has six or more years of surgical training and/or experience. Out of these 6 years, three of them must be in the field of plastic surgery.
  • Has been trained and has hands-on experience in all areas of cosmetic surgery including breast, body, and face.
  • Is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
  • Participates in continuing education requirements including patient safety and adhering to a very strict code of ethics.

And the final criterion is that they must only perform surgery in an accredited medical facility.
