Thigh Liposuction
Liposuction of the anterior (inner), or outer, thigh area is a common procedure for people looking to tone and shape the thighs, remove inner thigh fat and tighten the underlying muscles.
Liposuction of the Inner Thighs
Most commonly requested by women, liposuction of the inner thighs helps to remove fat and transform the appearance of the leg and decrease excessive rubbing of the thighs.
Liposuction of the inner thigh is commonly sought by people who have lost large amounts of weight through diet and exercise, and want to correct sagging skin. In the anterior, inner, thigh liposuction procedure, the most desired result is a smoothing of the skin and muscle rather than heavy removal of inner thigh fat.
Many requests are also made by women that simply feel that they have to fat legs. Although fat removal occurs during liposuction of the inner thigh, the ultimate goal of the surgeon is an overall improvement in appearance.
Inner thigh fat is removed from the thigh muscle in a way that will create a smooth, contoured look, of the leg, as a finished result. Treatment of the knee usually accompanies liposuction of the inner thigh. Many patients find that the fat deposits in the thighs extend to the knee area, and request that the knee be treated as well.
It is advised that both of these procedures are done at the same time to avoid an uneven appearance of the leg. It is generally safe to combine these procedures, and patients report an overwhelming amount of satisfaction with their overall look. During the liposuction treatment, surgeons will use a smaller cannula to treat the delicate areas of the inner thigh and upper knee.
The fatty deposits of the inner thigh are soft and jelly-like, creating a more optimal surface to perform the procedure.
Patients are advised that removing large amounts of fat from the outer thigh may result in unattractive irregularities in the legs.

Considerations
A factor that has to be considered during liposuction of the inner thigh is the elasticity of the skin. Many patients have loose, dimpling and wrinkling skin that makes it more difficult to achieve the desired smoothness. Patients with firm skin are the best candidates for inner thigh liposuction. Many patients are saddled with sagging skin following extreme weight loss.
Patients are advised that the most effective results will be achieved by patients with tighter skin, and should not expect that liposuction will remove all of the wrinkles in the skin. In fact, in some cases, the procedure may cause more wrinkling of the skin. However, inner thigh liposuction can improve the overall look by removing the underlying fat and giving the thighs a more toned appearance.
Recovery
Post-operative care for inner thigh liposuction is usually quite simple and can be performed by the patient. Proper care of the incision site usually includes changing of the bandages and dressings, and allowing for maximum healing.
Patients are encouraged to apply moderate compression to the affected area, and to apply padding to absorb any drainage. Many patients wear a restrictive garment to prevent and treat swelling and to help facilitate the natural healing of the leg.
Good Candidates for Liposuction of the Inner and Outer Thigh
Most patients who have realistic expectations of the results of the surgery make good candidates. Liposuction will usually not provide dramatic results, rather, it will improve the overall appearance and give the patient a toned look.
Patients who understand that liposuction is not perfect and who are in good overall health are good candidates for liposuction. It is important to note that liposuction is not intended to cause massive weight loss.
In most procedures, only about a pound or two is removed from the affected area. While this may not sound like a lot, the effects of this removal can significantly alter the outer appearance of the patient. Patients who suffer from chronic health problems such as cardiac arrhythmias, seizure disorders and immune function disorders are not good candidates for liposuction.
Patients who take NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are advised against undergoing liposuction as excessive bleeding may occur.
Side Effects
Although liposuction of the anterior thigh is a relatively common procedure, some adverse side effects may occur. Patients are advised against having the entire thigh treated at once, also called circumferential liposuction.
It is recommended that patients receive their treatment in stages, to decrease the chances of swelling, excessive pain and discomfort. In rare cases, patients may suffer from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) as a result of circumferential liposuction. This is why it is strongly recommended that patients allow time between procedures to allow the body to heal itself naturally.
Fees and Financial Considerations
As with any other surgical procedure, the costs of liposuction surgery vary widely.
The overall cost of liposuction will depend on a number of factors, including the size of the area to be treated, whether there is a need for follow-up treatment, and the number of treatments performed. In addition, post-operative fees, laboratory testing and other related expenses factor into this cost.
The anesthesiologist fee is also a consideration, as some procedures may be done under local anesthetic while others are performed under a general anesthetic. Patients must also bear in mind that liposuction, while common, is still a surgical procedure.
Candidates for the surgery should avoid choosing a surgeon based solely on fees. A poor liposuction procedure may require expensive follow-up surgery to correct the results, costing significantly more than having a quality procedure done the first time.
Costs of Liposuction Surgery
The average cost of liposuction of the thigh areas is $2,000-$5,000 per area. (This total is for one area only, inner and outer thighs are treated separately.)
This cost can vary depending on the geographic region of the surgery. Cost for procedures in New York and Los Angeles, for example may be significantly higher. Liposuction of the inner and outer thighs is a great way to contour the body and give a better overall appearance.
Most patients report that the body is more aesthetically pleasing following the procedure and recovery time is minimal. Liposuction is a procedure that can transform your overall look and your life. Find a full article on thigh liposuction costs and financing alternatives here.
